10 Outdoor Spring Cleaning Projects
Spring cleaning isn’t exciting for a lot of us. But it is important. As the winter near an end and we start looking forward to spring and warm weather, something within us tells us to get our homes in order by cleaning, organizing and throwing away things we’ve collected over the winter.
But who says spring cleaning is only for the inside of a house?
The outside of your home could probably use a little refreshing after a cold, dreary winter, too!
It’s Time For Home Exterior Cleaning
Here are home exterior cleaning projects that will drastically improve the appearance of your home in Atlanta, and, more importantly, will provide much-needed maintenance and upkeep that will save you a lot of money in years to come.
1. Gutter Cleaning
Spring is the best time to clean out your gutters, since a lot of leaves and debris collected during the fall and winter. Pollen is at its highest during the spring, making a mess in your gutters and downspouts if they aren’t properly cleaned.
Plus, pests and critters are searching for places to build homes during spring, so having your gutters cleaned out will help to prevent an infestation in your home.
Gutter cleaning will consist of cleaning the inside of your gutters, removing mold, mildew and stains and restoring them to a nice appearance.
2. Window Cleaning
Home window cleaning is a must for spring cleaning. First floor windows won’t cause you much of a headache, but second and third floor windows will be trickier to reach.
Cleaning windows by hand is a tiring job, and it will require a lot of supplies, not to mention going up and down a ladder! A soft wash or professional cleaning of your exterior windows is the recommended way to get the panes and the outer frame clean.
3. Pressure Washing
You aren’t going to want clean gutters and clean windows on a dirty house. That means you will want to pressure wash your home too!
Pressure washing is quick, effective and affordable. You can clean your house, patio furniture, patios, wood and stone porches and walkways with very little effort. It will eliminate dirt and mud so they won’t stain your home, and you can also prevent the spread of mold, mildew and allergens.
4. Driveway Cleaning
Clearing off your home’s driveway and giving it a good cleaning may seem strange since you’ll be driving on it, but, a clean, cared for driveway can increase the curb appeal of your home.
A professional pressure washing service will do wonders when it comes to driveway cleaning, whether it is concrete, asphalt, brick or some other material. Also consider adding a gravel or mulch border to your home’s driveway to really make it pop!
5. Patio Cleaning
Your home’s patio probably gets the most use throughout the summer, so it’s easy to forget about it during the winter since you aren’t doing a lot of outdoor entertaining, leisure or grilling. Your patio might be in bad condition the first time you step onto it in the spring.
Detergent and water – and a little muscle – can sometimes be enough for patio cleaning, but if you notice signs of mold or mildew, you need to consider a more serious option, like professional power washing, to guarantee that friends and family can enjoy your patio all summer long.
6. Roof Cleaning
Mold and moss are typical roof issues in Atlanta. While you are cleaning the outside of your home, it is an excellent time to clean your home’s roof as well, but you’ll need to use a different process than the one you use for the rest of your home’s exterior.
If you notice streaks on your home’s roof, algae is probably the reason. Moss is pretty obvious, too. These particles cannot be scrubbed off of shingles, nor can you pressure wash the roof. Both of these methods will destroy the shingles on your home’s roof.
The ideal course of action for roof cleaning is to mist the shingles with a half-water, half-bleach mixture and then leave it be. This will kill any organic organisms on your home’s roof without reducing its lifespan.
7. Spruce up the Front
The front of your home is probably what most people see, so try to make the best impression you can for visitors, neighbors and for yourself! Coming home to a well-maintained exterior will improve your day, and it will motivate you to spend more time outside.
Clean your front porch with soap and water or a good pressure wash. Wipe cobwebs and dirt off of the front porch, and think about painting it a new color for a really fresh look! Clean overlooked areas like the porch ceiling, light fixtures and ceiling fans, too.
8. Organize Garden Tools
You will probably be spending a lot more time outdoors, so spring is a wonderful opportunity to organize whatever you’ll need for outdoor work.
Yard tools and pool care equipment need to all have an exact area outside your home – a place that it is safe from weather and not in sight so it isn’t a constant eyesore. Taking the time to organize in the spring allows you to appreciate the outside of your home so much more during the time of year that you are going to spend the most time outside.
9. Lawn Care & Landscaping
Your lawn, trees and garden bushes can make a huge impact on the look of your home.
Remove weeds around the exterior of your flower beds and walkways, till up places where you’ll be planting later on and sweep off walkways. You can also spray pre-emergent weed poison to make yard maintenance easier on yourself throughout the next few months. Trim all the bushes too.
10. Clean the Grill
After sitting unused for several months, your grill could need a good cleaning, too. Leftover grease and food from your grill are definitely unappetizing, but they can also make you and your family ill.
Wet it down to get rid of ash, then scrub the grates with a plastic scrubber or grill brush (so you do not leave behind particles that can get into food) and a basic dish soap or degreaser.
